The Ayam Cemani is an exceptionally rare chicken breed originating from Indonesia and is renowned for its dramatic all-black appearance. From glossy black feathers with green and purple sheen to dark skin, muscles, bones, and internal organs, this breed is often referred to as the “Lamborghini of poultry” for its striking beauty and rarity.
This intense coloration is caused by a rare genetic trait called fibromelanism, which results in heavy melanin pigmentation throughout the body. Outside of their appearance, Ayam Cemani are generally hardy birds that tolerate heat well and are fairly cold-hardy when properly managed. They are alert and can be flighty, especially when startled.
Notice:
Full Transparency regarding The Urban Ladybug Farm Ayam Cemani breeding program, please note that if you are seeking the absolute top-tier examples of this breed, our breeding program may not be the one for you, as we breed pet quality Ayam Cemani.
Our breeding stock consists of Ayam Cemani that express zero silver feather leakage and zero mulberry/cranberry comb/wattles leakage, however pigmentation may vary in offspring and cannot be guaranteed. This is a HIGH CULL breed and we are always re-homeing birds that do not meet our breeding program expectations. With that being said, please take the time to make an informed decision as to whether our breeding line aligns with your goals and expectations.
Roosters typically weigh 5–7 pounds, while hens average 4–5 pounds. Hens lay approximately 60–100 small to medium cream-colored eggs per year and are known to be broody with intermittent laying patterns. Despite a common myth, Ayam Cemani do not lay black eggs.
These birds are visually extraordinary and best suited for breeders or enthusiasts seeking a rare, eye-catching addition to their flock.
